The Health Ministry has converted a building once used as a workshop for the National Leprosy Centre at the Sungai Buloh hospital into a ward for Covid-19 patients.
According to Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah yesterday, the new ward has 60 beds and will be used to house patients with light symptoms.
A healthcare worker told the Rayuan Pengamal Perubatan Facebook group that although the new ward was not air-conditioned, patients were not complaining.
"Patients said this place is like a resort. Congratulations to the team," wrote the staff.
The National Leprosy Centre was built in 1930 and was in use until 1995. It was originally designed as a settlement to separate leprosy patients from the population.
It later became known as the Valley of Hope. Activists have been campaigning for the buildings to be preserved and recognised as a national heritage.
