What a feat – M’sian woman with no arms sew PPEs with her feet
Learning how to use the sewing machine is no easy feat, but 32-year-old Norfarrah Syahirah Shaari has proven that she could do it just by using her feet.
Born with no arms, Norfarrah shared a two-minute video that showed how she operated the sewing machine using her feet to sew isolation gowns used as part of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontliners at Teluk Intan Hospital and Teluk Intan health clinic.
Learning how to use the sewing machine is no easy feat, but 32-year-old Norfarrah Syahirah Shaari has proven that she could do it just by using her feet.
Born with no arms, Norfarrah shared a two-minute video that showed how she operated the sewing machine using her feet to sew isolation gowns used as part of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontliners at Teluk Intan Hospital and Teluk Intan health clinic.
"I am so motivated to sew this PPE suit for the frontliners.
"This is all that I can do, together with a team of staff from Teluk Intan community college and several other volunteers from around the area," the college administration assistant said in a Facebook post.
According to the New Straits Times, Norfarrah revealed that she learnt how to sew about eight years ago as she needed to make custom clothes for herself. At around the same time, she also reportedly taught herself how to drive in order to be independent.
"Some even ask, how do I even thread a needle? Well, it was very difficult at first and required a lot of patience but I managed to do it.
"Now it takes me only a second to thread the needle using my feet," she was quoted as saying.
She said the project was a part of the community college's corporate
social responsibility programme, known as #DariKomunitiUntukKomuniti.
"A total of 35 people are involved, including 25 volunteer tailors from
the KKTI area. We expect to make 252 isolation gowns using 400 metres of
fabric.
"Each volunteer has a different role. Someone will measure and cut the fabric, another will draw the pattern and someone else will sew the PPE," Norfarrah said, adding that she could sew eight PPE gowns a day.
