Local groups seek corporate sponsors for production of PPE suits

CORONAVIRUS | Local groups Biji-biji Initiative and Me.reka are seeking corporate sponsorship for their collaboration with the Social Textiles - a community of nine social impact organisations - to initiate decentralised production of personal protective equipment (PPE scrub sets for Covid-19 frontliners.
This follows the success of their initial project to produce and distribute over 24,670 face shields, 1,505 aero chambers and 58 patient isolation boxes to 75 frontline organisations across Malaysia.
"To drive the production, we are actively seeking corporate partners to help power our initiative and bring essential supplies to those at the frontlines," said the groups in a statement.
It went to describe the Social Textiles movement as a consolidation of production partners and makers, consisting of impact-focused individuals, organisations, and communities.
"This phase of our Covid-19 relief aims to deliver PPEs to frontline organisations through a sustainable business model.
"A social impact model allows Social Textiles to empower local communities by creating employment opportunities, especially in such economic times, create engaging micro-economies that stimulate and ensure the business sustainability of local organisations and social enterprises while maintaining transparency in product costing and delivery fulfilment," said the groups.
Under Phase 2 of its project, the groups said corporate donors can pledge a quantity of PPE scrubs sets - the overall protection suit worn by frontliners - to be produced.
Social impact tracking measures will be in place to ensure corporates are provided with complete impact reports to measure and indicate the extent of the impact and goodwill that came from the sponsorship, it added.
"The partnership allows us to price the PPE scrubs set at only a cost of RM 28 per set.
"Currently, our production capacity is between 4,000 - 6,000 units per week and to date, we have provided 3,000 units of PPE to public hospitals," said the groups.
"A sponsorship of RM 100,000 can unlock compounding impact, resulting in RM24,090 of value directly to the hands of individual tailors, RM24,090 of value directly to local social impact organisations and upwards of RM 100,000 of CSR value for the benefit of the corporate," it added.
Overall, the groups said the project aims to mobilise 100 makers from within Malaysian communities, allowing these individuals to earn and provide for their families with a business model that ensures 25 percent of proceeds from each sale go to the individual maker.
