CORONAVIRUS | Deputy Health Minister Noor Azmi Ghazali and Perak executive council member Razman Zakaria pleaded guilty to a charge of violating the movement control order (MCO) in Perak.
They were among 15 people who pleaded guilty at the Gerik Magistrate's Court this morning over the same offence and were fined RM1,000 each, with one-month's jail in default.
Bernama reported the fine was meted out by Magistrate Norhidayati Mohammad Nasroh. All eventually paid the fine.
Calls had come for the duo to be investigated for breaching the government-imposed MCO after the deputy health minister posted a series of photographs online of him and his entourage visiting a religious school in Lenggong on April 17.
Noor Azmi and Razman were seen having a meal with about 18 other people without practising social distancing measures (photo).
The posts were later deleted and they have since apologised.
Malaysia has been under MCO since March 18, with the order period extended three times.
Under the order, only essential businesses are allowed to operate, and movement is restricted with the exception of emergencies, to purchase food, necessities and medical care.
Following the controversy surrounding Noor Azmi's actions, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said elected representatives are allowed to conduct programmes at their constituencies during the MCO, but they must abide by the standard operating procedures.
The latter said no big gatherings, big programmes for handing over aid or big banquets are permitted.
