Earlier this week, a video of passengers standing shoulder-to-shoulder inside a KTM train carriage had made rounds on social media.
Verifying the video, the ministry explained that a six-car train had encountered mechanical difficulties and resulted in passengers being “ushered” into a three-car replacement train.
The packed replacement train seen in the clip was a Port Klang-Tanjung Malim service early in the morning of May 5.
“The ministry has issued a stern reprimand to the staff and officers who had allowed this gross violation of the movement control order’s (MCO) health guidelines,” it said in a statement yesterday.
The ministry assured that the mistake would not happen again and said stricter crowd control measures will be put in place.
“The ministry and KTM Berhad offer their apologies to the public and remind all to be mindful of the Health Ministry’s public health guidelines during the MCO, including always practising safe distancing of at least one metre and wearing face masks before boarding rail and train services,” it added.
Yesterday, KTM Berhad had also explained the incident but said it was passengers who had failed to distance themselves in their morning rush to get to work.
Standard operating procedures for KTM operations during the conditional MCO include ensuring a one-metre distance between passengers, encouraging the use of face masks and using thermal scanners to detect passenger temperatures.
