DAP MP: 'Atrocious' of Najib to think of polls amid Covid-19 struggle

She referred to a news report on a statement made by the former Umno chairperson who said there was a “high chance” of elections in light of the current political uncertainty.
"In a time when schools have yet to reopen, hairdressers have had zero income for three months, and people being retrenched, this Umno leader is busy suggesting snap polls. He even went as far as calling for SOPs to be drawn up.
“It is, therefore, most atrocious of Najib to have conceived such an outrageous suggestion...This is the clearest sign that Najib is putting his political interest above the welfare of the nation.
"The prime minister (Muhyiddin Yassin) should tell his backbencher MPs to stop undermining his razor-thin majority government,” the DAP lawmaker said in a statement today.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Najib called on the Health Ministry and Election Commission (EC) to start drafting standard operating procedures in the event an election is called.
However, in the same post, he also stated that an election at this time poses a high risk to the people’s health and to the country’s economy.
“If the national politics continue to be in upheaval to the point the government cannot focus on restoring the economy following the movement control order (MCO), believe that the majority of the people would rather choose to face the risks and call for Parliament to be dissolved.
"This is as the majority is sick of political drama that is occurring every day,” he posted.
In a later post, the Pekan MP denied that Umno is plotting to trigger a snap election by moving against the Perikatan Nasional government.
Instead, he accused the Pakatan Harapan coalition of attempting to topple the government by “buying MPs” and said Umno is prepared in the event Parliament is dissolved if Harapan manages to secure a slim majority.
Najib was responding to Bersatu supreme council member A Kadir Jasin, who speculated if Umno and BN were going to make a move against PN.
This was after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi posted a photograph online of him and Najib, accompanied by the caption: "We are ready for GE15. Are you ready to be with us?"
