CORONAVIRUS | Beginning June 10, Malaysians returning from abroad will be permitted to undergo mandatory two-week quarantine at their respective homes.
According to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, citizens arriving will no longer be sent to government-appointed centres to undergo quarantine.
“Instead, as soon as they arrive at the airport, they will undergo a swab test. Those found to be positive will be sent to the hospital, while those found to be negative will be allowed home to undergo home quarantine,” he said during his daily press conference in Putrajaya today.
However, he said these citizens must download the MySejahtera mobile app and would be made to wear quarantine wristbands for the duration of their self-isolation.
“So even though they will be allowed to go home, they will be monitored via MySejahtera and will not be allowed out. With the wristbands, they will be identified,” he said.
Those found to violate this order could face a compound of up to RM1,000 or face court charges where they would be fined or jailed, or both.
This will be gazetted in the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 or Act 342, he said.
Ismail said the decision followed data which showed that those who tested positive after 14 days of quarantine at the quarantine centres were only around one percent of the overall number.
He added that the number of new Covid-19 cases in other countries has also declined significantly, prompting the government to change the policy.
To a later question on how long for returnees would have to wait for test results before being allowed to leave for home to begin quarantine, the senior minister said there would be little waiting time as the antigen rapid test kits being used would return results speedily.
"However, in cases where people have to wait for results, say up to two days, for example, then we will have to place them at the quarantine centres until the results come out."
Commenting on the busting of a syndicate producing fake Covid-19 test result certificates, Ismail urged the public to avoid getting involved as buyers.
"What happens to their family if they have a certificate showing that they tested negative when they actually contracted the virus?
"Self-awareness is important," he said.
Ismail Sabri warned those who were involved that they would face the full force of the law once arrested.
Recently, the police have smashed an operation producing fake Covid-19 test results which are believed to have been sold to migrant workers who wanted them for employment purposes.
