No new fake news investigation papers in last two months - minister

CORONAVIRUS | There have been no new investigation papers opened for false news related to Covid-19 in the past two months, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“No new investigation papers have been opened by the police and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in the past two months and this shows that society’s awareness about the spread of false news has increased.
“However, the police and MCMC are in the process of examining several reports received about false news according to existing laws,” Ismail (above) said in a statement today.
Up till yesterday, he said, there have been 266 investigation papers on false news related to Covid-19.
Of that amount, 172 of them are still under investigation, 30 have been charged in court, 12 have been given warning notices, 13 are in the trial process while 17 have pleaded guilty, he said.
The police and the MCMC will continue to monitor the spread of false news closely as the government looks upon this issue seriously and will not compromise on the proliferation of false news.
The Communication and Multimedia Ministry’s Quick Response Team (PRP) has also issued 352 denials and explanations on false news to the public, Ismail added.
Meanwhile, he said the police had arrested 78 individuals yesterday for violating the movement control order (MCO).
One individual had since been remanded while another 35 individuals are out on bail. Another 45 individuals were fined.
Among the violations, he said, include activities which involved the attendance of a number of people which made it hard to practice social distancing.
Also yesterday, 934 Malaysians returned from overseas and all but one were ordered to undergo the mandatory home quarantine. The one individual was brought to the hospital.
