Unemployment eases slightly in June
The unemployment rate eased slightly in June, at 4.9 percent down from a record high of 5.3 percent the previous month.
According to the Department of Statistics (DOSM), the number of unemployed persons was estimated at 773,200, down from an estimated 826,100 the previous month.

According to the Department of Statistics (DOSM), the number of unemployed persons was estimated at 773,200, down from an estimated 826,100 the previous month.
"Meanwhile, year-on-year, the number of unemployed persons rose by 251,800," said chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin last Friday.
Unemployment is defined as people who are interested in and capable of working but do not have a job. The unemployment rate is derived from information collected in the DOSM's labour force survey, which is conducted through face-to-face interviews.
The DOSM said the labour force had increased by 0.3 percent compared to the previous month but the number of people outside the labour force had increased marginally by 0.1 percent as well.
Those outside the labour force denotes those who are neither employed nor unemployed, including homemakers, students, retirees, disabled persons, and those not interested in working.
Labour force participation had increased marginally by 0.1 percent compared to the previous month to 68.1 percent - a level not seen since 2017-2018.
Labour force participation peaked in Jan 2020 at 68.9 percent.
