Deputy minister Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who recently appeared in a leaked video purportedly promising to issue support letters in exchange for party votes, has won the post of Bersatu Youth chief for the 2019-2022 term.
In the national wing polls results released by Bersatu election committee chairperson Syed Hamid Albar today, Wan Ahmad was named victor, defeating former Bersatu Youth exco Mohd Muzzammil Ismail.
Meanwhile, Sabah’s Ceasar Mandela Malakun, the Sabah Bersatu Youth deputy chief formerly of Upko, was named as his deputy.
The role of Youth head was previously held by former Pakatan Harapan’s youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman who was booted out after aligning himself to former party chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and for sitting with the opposition during the May 18 Dewan Rakyat session.
Wan Ahmad, formerly a special officer to Syed Saddiq, is currently the deputy youth and sports minister.
Earlier this month, Wan Ahmad was seen in a leaked video purportedly showing him promising to leverage on his position within the government and Bersatu to issue support letters should he succeed in securing votes for the party polls.
"How (can I help?), I can issue support letters as a deputy minister, as the youth chief, and I can make a copy to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to strengthen (the support letters).
"That is using one's position. Positions are given to help make things easier for you. It is not for me alone. But to help you, help me too.
"Firstly, vote for me," he appeared to say in the video. He, however, did not respond to Malaysiakini’s request for a response at the time.
The video courted criticism from the opposition who alleged that this was akin to “BN culture” when ruling the country for over six decades before being ousted by Harapan in 2018.
Meanwhile, following the annual meeting held by the 164 youth divisions yesterday, Akmal Zahin Zainal Zahir was appointed the new permanent chairperson with Mohamad Syaiful Ibrahim Shahli as his deputy.
According to Syed Hamid, nine other divisions were unable to hold their meetings due to a lack of quorum. A total of 9,496 delegates cast their votes.
