Johor Umno Youth has questioned Bersatu’s intention to join Muafakat Nasional.
In a statement today, its chief Mohd Hairi Mad Shah (above) disagreed with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s recent comment that Muafakat Nasional “supported” the Perikatan Nasional (PN) grand coalition.
His comments have since led to a warning from Johor Bersatu Youth.
Hairi characterised PN as a temporary pact formed to “save the country” from the previous Pakatan Harapan administration.
“That was the main reason PN was formed.
“It is not an official coalition neither is it the biggest one in the country,” he said in a social media post entitled “If you agree to join Muafakat why does it need to support PN?”
Hairi proposed that Muafakat - comprising Umno and PAS - replace PN as the ruling coalition, pointing out Umno’s decision to snub PN.
“Bersatu wants to join Muafakat. So after this, let's allow Muafakat to be the grand coalition that leads our beloved country.
“I just want to issue a reminder to jangan lebih kuah dari sudu,” he said.
The Malay idiom is typically used to advise someone to stop acting self-importantly.
Hairi further called for caution in case Umno lost out with Bersatu’s entry into Muafakat.
“Let’s be careful and fair so that we don’t yang dikejar pun tidak dapat, yang dikendong pula keciciran,” he added.
This Malay idiom means losing what one already has while on an unsuccessful quest for even more possessions.
Is Umno threatened by Muhyiddin?
In response, a Johor Bersatu Youth leader chastised Hairi for being “rude” to the prime minister.
“Johor Umno Youth’s statement saying Muhyiddin should not be lebih kuah dari sudu is a statement that sounds rude and contrary to Malay custom.
“It appears very desperate and (they seem) threatened by the PM,” said Sri Gading Bersatu Youth chief Muhamad Zulfadhly Zulkifly in a statement on Facebook.
Taking several sarcastic swipes at Hairi, Zulfadhly urged him to respect Muhyiddin who had far more political experience than him.
He also assured that Umno had no cause for concern.
“With honesty and sincerity, we from Johor Bersatu Youth have no problems at all working with anyone whether in PN or Muafakat.
“As long as the underlying basis (for cooperation) is in the people’s interests, especially for the Malays and all bumiputera from Sabah and Sarawak," Zulfadhly added.
