A Malaysian woman was sentenced to death by a Vietnam court on Monday after finding her guilty of trafficking 3.3kg of cocaine from Brazil into the country.
The woman, identified as Kalaivani G Muniandy, 40, was handed the capital punishment by the Ho Chi Minh City Court over the offence committed in October 2018, the VNExpress news portal reported.
"She was arrested in October 2018 upon landing in Ho Chi Minh City on an Emirates flight from Dubai. Customs officials at the Tan Son Nhat Airport checked her suitcase and found 3.3kg of cocaine hidden in food boxes," it said.
Kalaivani reportedly worked as a security guard at an airport warehouse in Malaysia, when she met an Indian man identified as Prakash.
The two then established contact over Whatsapp, before Prakash was said to have asked Kalaivani to work for him as his liaison overseas and to transport goods.
"She accepted the proposal and was paid RM6,000 for each trip apart from travel and accommodation expenses," the portal said.
Prior to the woman's arrest, she had travelled from Malaysia to Sao Paulo, Brazil on flights booked by Prakash, whose nationality was not specified.
Kalaivani was then given a suitcase containing four food boxes, which she was asked to deliver to a hotel in Ho Chi Minh.
She has denied knowledge that the boxes contained drugs.
