The Umno supreme council has decided that BN will contest in seats that it had lost due to defections since the last general election.
“This is the supreme council’s - not the president’s – decision to retake (the seats). Thus, we will not give even one seat to Bersatu. That much is certain.
“If Bersatu still wants (to contest in the next general election), then they can contest in other seats.
“It is up to them to contest in Bersatu Blackout’s seats or wherever else, they can go contest in that place,” said supreme council member Zahidi Zainul Abidin (above) in a video by the news portal Suara TV today.
BN has also decided to field candidates in seats that it previously contested and lost in 2018, but garnered the second most number of votes, he added.
The move would likely leave Bersatu with few viable seats to contest when it comes to seat negotiations for the 15th general election as well as the Sabah state polls.
As for its Muafakat Nasional partner PAS, the Padang Besar Umno division chief said Umno would make way if PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang asks to contest in a seat where he would certainly win.
“But if the PAS deputy president or vice-president and so on asks, we will discuss it. That is another issue,” he said.
In the wake of Pakatan Harapan’s victory during the 14th general election, some Umno lawmakers had defected to Bersatu or became independent lawmakers aligned with the Harapan-led government.
Following the events of the Sheraton Move in February, however, Bersatu left the Harapan coalition and joined BN, PAS and other parties to form the Perikatan Nasional government instead.
