10 prosecution witnesses for Shafee's RM9.5m money laundering trial

The prosecution will call 10 witnesses to testify during lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s RM9.5 million money laundering and false statement trial, the Kuala Lumpur High Court heard today.
DPP Afzainizam Abdul Aziz informed judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin about this during a case mention on the matter this morning.
“There will be 10 (prosecution) witnesses,” Afzainizam said. However, he did not reveal who specifically the 10 witnesses would be.
On Sept 13, 2018, at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, Shafee was charged with two counts of money laundering and two counts of giving false statements in relation to RM9.5 million allegedly received from former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
On Oct 3, 2018, it was reported that Shafee’s case was transferred from the lower court to the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
During mention of the case before Jamil this morning, both Afzainizam and the accused’s defence counsel Sarah Abishegam sought for the trial dates to be fixed for next year.
Abishegam told the court that there were two appeals before the appellate court that were related to Shafee’s present criminal case.
One of this is Shafee’s appeal against the High Court’s dismissal of his application to disqualify former federal court judge Gopal Sri Ram from prosecuting his RM9.5 million money laundering and false statement case.
The other is his appeal against the dismissal of his judicial review application for the Kuala Lumpur High Court's dismissal of his bid to disqualify Sri Ram.
She also sought for the court, when setting the trial dates, to take into account that Shafee also had to represent Najib in the former premier’s RM2.28 billion 1MDB corruption trial next year.
Najib’s RM2.28 billion 1MDB graft trial is currently ongoing before another Kuala Lumpur High Court.
Jamil then fixed 10 days beginning May 7 next year for Shafee’s trial.
Aside from May 7, the other trial dates fixed for next year are May 21 and 28, June 4 and 11, July 1, 2, 22 and 23 and Aug 6.
