A mother has lodged a police report against a police officer for allegedly beating and abusing her son during his remand period in a police station.

"When I saw my son M Ilamaran, his chest was swollen and he told me that the soles of his feet had been beaten with a rubber hose, and he complained of terrible pain due to the beatings," S Koyilvani said in her police report.

"I was only allowed to see my son for five minutes," she added. The police report was lodged on Nov 2 at the Dang Wangi district police station in Kuala Lumpur.

Koyilvani was only allowed to see her remanded son at Dang Wangi two days after he was detained on Oct 24 for suspected armed robbery on Jalan Tun HS Lee.

The police report was lodged against Insp M Selvaraja who is an investigating officer with the Dang Wangi police station.

Koyilvani also stated that when she met her son on Oct 30, she was told by Insp Selvaraja that he would be transferred to Kajang for murder charges.

"I was in a state of shock and he never gave any kind of logical explanation. I am very afraid of those accusations thrown against my son. He never had a criminal record.

"I was not given any explanations and I don't know what the inspector would do to him. My son is only 18," she added.

Ilamaran was subsequently released on Nov 2 while two of his friends who were arrested with him were further remanded at the Kajang police station.

Charged with armed robbery

Ilamaran, M Babu, 22, and S Sathiaparubu, 20, were then brought before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court where they were formally charged under sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code with armed robbery last Friday.

If found guilty they could be jailed for a maximum period of 10 years.

According to their charge sheet, the trio and another accomplice who is still at large, were accused of robbing RM23,500 worth of goods from a cellular phone outlet.

Speaking to malaysiakini , Koyilvani said that the RM15,000 bail requested by Magistrate Habibah Haron was exorbitant. The bail could not be met and the trio have been remanded at the Sungei Buloh prison.

"The amount is too high. I am not working and my husband is only a lorry driver who earns RM1,000 a month," said Koyilvani.

"We would not be able to meet the amount and would also be burdened as Deepavali is coming up a day after tomorrow," she said.

Meanwhile, the lawyer for the three, Lee Tee Kiat said that he would be appealing before a High Court judge to lower the court bail tomorrow.

"The amount is too high. The deputy registrar at the courts have told me that they would try to set a time tomorrow so that I may see a judge on this matter," Lee said.

Selvaraja could not be contacted as he is on leave.
