Police have recorded DAP’s Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman’s statement over her alleged breach of conditional movement control order restrictions in Pahang.
Young Syefura said she has given her full cooperation and hopes authorities will treat her fairly despite her position, and again apologised for the incident.
“I leave it entirely to the police and the attorney-general to decide what action to take against me. I hope whatever action taken will be fair and just, without double-standards, although I am an elected representative.
“I am remorseful and, again, apologise for what happened,” she said today.
Young Syefura said police had summoned her to have her statement recorded at the Sepang district police headquarters, where she was accompanied by her legal counsel Syahredzan Johan.
Earlier today, Selangor CID cheif Fadzil Ahmat said the police had received two reports on the incident so far where the Young Syefura had allegedly had a picnic with several people.
He said investigations are ongoing under Section 22(b) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988. The provision deals with disobedience towards any lawful order issued by any authorised officer.
Yesterday, Young Syefura had apologised after her Instagram posts drew the ire of netizens, who accused her of breaching conditional MCO rules.
Despite her apology, some are still insisting for her resignation, particularly since Young Syefura had previously called for Primary Industries and Commodities Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali’s resignation over the latter’s alleged breaches of Covid-19 related restrictions.
Meanwhile, elaborating on one of the police reports received, Fadzil said the complainant first saw one of Young Syefura’s photos on Twitter, and then found a total of nine photos on her Instagram account that are believed to have been taken at Bagan Lalang beach near Avani Gold Coast Sepang Resort.
For the record, the photos have since been removed from the Instagram account.
“According to the complainant, Selangor is currently under the conditional MCO where such activities are not allowed.
“The complainant also said this is not the first incident involving politicians, and the recurrence of such incidents have angered the people because no action is taken against politicians whereas ordinary folk who breach standard operating procedures will have action taken against them immediately,” he said in a statement today.
Picnics are among the activities prohibited under the conditional MCO, along with tourism activities that involve travel in and out of areas under conditional MCO.
However, Young Syefura had previously clarified that Selangor is her state of residence despite being a member of the Pahang legislative assembly.
