Top Glove says Meru factories still operating with workers outside EMCO zone

Rubber gloves manufacturer Top Glove has clarified that the number of workers affected by the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) imposed on the workers' dormitories was 5,700 individuals.
"Top Glove wishes to clarify that the 14 days enhanced MCO order from today to Nov 30 affects about 5,700 workers working in Meru, Klang, and not 13,190 workers as reported.
"This represents about 27 percent of our total employees of 21,000," it said in a statement.
Top Glove said its factories in Meru, as result of the enhanced MCO, would operate at reduced capacity. It said it would ensure workers not under the restriction would work under strict standard operating procedures.
For the record, the total of 21,000 employees includes those in other factories abroad, such as Thailand, China and Vietnam.
Yesterday, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the implementation of the enhanced MCO on Top Glove workers' dormitories following the detection of 215 Covid-19 cases as of Nov 15.
Ismail said that some 13,190 staff, and close to 1,200 residents in the area, would be affected by the order.
Meanwhile, Top Glove said that the majority of the affected workers were asymptomatic.
Klang's Disaster Management Committee said in a statement today that the order is imposed on two sectors, namely sector A, which involved female dormitories and nearby residences, and sector B, which involved male dormitories and neighbouring houses.
It said that the Klang District Health Department would screen 3,550 workers from both sectors.
