Malaysiakini joins regional project for in-depth reporting on energy, environment
Malaysiakini will join other leading news organisations in the region to produce in-depth reports on energy, environment and resource issues as part of the Asian Stories project launched today.

Malaysiakini will join other leading news organisations in the region to produce in-depth reports on energy, environment and resource issues, as part of the Asian Stories project launched today.
The project is a multi-year initiative by the Sydney-based Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas (JNI), to support journalism in Asia.
“Asian Stories will be a decade-long effort to help Asian and international journalists tell the region’s most important stories in intelligent and compelling ways.
“In particular, it will encourage greater engagement and collaboration among the media in the region and counterparts elsewhere in the world, especially from Australia,” JNI executive director Mark Ryan said.
The first round of reporting projects are expected to be published in 2021, JNI said.
Malaysiakini will collaborate with Tempo in Indonesia, the Centre for Media and Development Initiatives in Vietnam, Tortoise Media in the United Kingdom, the Australian Financial Review, Waseda Chronicle in Japan and the Korea Centre for Investigative Journalism, Newstapa in South Korea.
Other projects under the Asian Stories banner include an investigation of digital crimes in Hong Kong, South Korea and the Philippines and a collaboration between UK daily The Guardian with organisations in Myanmar and Cambodia.
Asian Stories will also support the Australian Financial Review's South-East Asia bureau next year, JNI said.
Besides reporting initiatives, the Asian Stories project also includes the publication of the News in Asia report which will look into the region's news landscape, it added.
“Asian Stories is a long-term investment by JNI. In the coming years, we will add new elements to the project to do what we can to encourage more and better reporting and deeper analysis of the world’s most important region,” Ryan said.
Established by Australian philanthropist Judith Neilson in 2018, the JNI works to support quality journalism through grants and education programmes.
