Just several hours after the article was published, their local MP Anthony Loke visited their Seremban home and gifted the family two tablet computers.
“Hope our small contributions can lighten the burden of the parents and ease the learning process of the children,” the lawmaker said in a Facebook post.
When contacted, Jaya said she also received a call from another person who bought the family a third tablet computer, slated to arrive later this week.
This is on top of financial donations from the public in response to the article.
Jaya said she, her husband and her children were overjoyed by the generosity shown to them.
“We are really happy. But I told the children that these devices are for their studies, not for playing games,” she said sternly.
Jaya was also glad to have her mobile phone back and looked forward to getting it fixed and using it to communicate with her family in Medan, Indonesia.
The device had become battered after a whole year of heavy-duty use by her children for all their online learning demands.
Twelve-year-old Neevashini said she was relieved she no longer had to share one device with all her siblings.
“I’m happy that we now have devices to study with. This will make it easier and I won’t have to fight with my siblings,’” she told Malaysiakini.
Jaya said the family intends to use the donations to purchase SIM cards and Internet data plans for their new devices.
“We won’t have stress so much now (about finances). This has helped us a lot,” she said.
