Covid-19 (May 17): 4,446 new cases, new record in T'ganu

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 4,446 new Covid-19 cases as Malaysia comes out of the Hari Raya break.

Terengganu set a new record by reporting 201 new cases. The next highest was 184 set on Feb 5.

The bulk of the new cases are still coming from the Klang Valley (44 percent) followed by Sarawak (433) and Johor (391).

A record number of deaths were reported today, along with a new record for the number of patients in intensive care.

With an estimated population of 6.53 million, there has been one Covid-19 positive person out of 42 in Selangor since the start of the pandemic.

As of yesterday, the R-naught for Malaysia stood at 1.05. An R-naught of more than 1.00 signified that the spread of Covid-19 was accelerating.

The only regions where the R-naught was less than 1.00 are Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak and Kelantan

Deaths

Another 45 deaths due to Covid-19 were reported by the Health Ministry today, bringing the national death toll to 1,947.

Selangor alone had 20 deaths, followed by Kuala Lumpur (4), Kelantan (4), Kedah (3), Perak (3), Johor (3), Negeri Sembilan (2), Malacca (2), Pahang (1), Penang (1), Sarawak (1) and Sabah (1).

The youngest victim was a 36-year-old female in Sabah. Three victims were already dead when they were brought to the hospital.

Clusters

A total of 484 out of 1,901 clusters are still active. This includes the 14 new clusters reported today.

The cluster with the most number of new cases reported is the Jalan Selirik cluster in Sarawak, which was first reported on April 23.
