Two Johor MPs have complained that some parts of the state are running out of Covid-19 vaccines earlier than expected even though at the national level, the number of vaccinations has hit record highs.
Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi and Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, in a joint-statement, said at least three vaccination centres in the state had to be temporarily closed because they ran out of vaccines to administer.
They are the Pekan Nanas (Pontian district), Simpang Renggam (Kluang district) and Parit Raja (Batu Pahat district) vaccination centres.
“We were also informed that the number of vaccines supplied daily to these districts, including Kulai, have fallen drastically.
“This shows there is insufficient vaccine stock in Johor or certain districts in Johor,” they said.
The duo said this was despite the number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationally hit a record high of 250,529 yesterday.
They noted on the same day, only 17,268 doses were administered in Johor. They added that it was as low as 13,718 doses on June 20.
They noted that previously, the state could administer more than 20,000 doses a day and this was seen on June 14, 15 and 17.
The MPs said they acknowledged the fact that the government was ramping up vaccination efforts in the Klang Valley which is worst-hit by the pandemic but added that transparency was needed.
“Most importantly, the number of doses distributed among the districts should be based on population.
“We were informed that there are youths in a certain minister’s constituency who have already received their vaccination appointment even though there are elderly folks in other constituencies that have yet to get their appointment,” they said.
They said such incidents erode public confidence in the National Immunisation Programme.
Wong and Teo urged the special committee for ensuring access to Covid-19 vaccine supply to publish the distribution of doses by districts on a daily basis.
At present, the data is published data but only at the state level.
“Transparency is the main factor to ensure the success of the National Immunisation Programme,” they said.
