Top Glove's medical glove factories in Klang, Selangor will temporarily cease operations pending clarification from the National Security Council (NSC).
“The company looks forward to safely resuming operations at the appropriate time and continuing to produce its much needed medical gloves for frontliners and healthcare workers in Malaysia and globally.
“The company continues to maintain strict adherence to the relevant rules and regulations, as well as Covid preventive standard operating procedures (SOPs), and is committed to safeguarding the health and safety of its workforce and the communities in which it operates,” it said in a statement this evening.
Furthermore, it was pointed out that the NSC's stand with regard to industries that come under essential services during the enhanced movement control order (MCO) affects all glovemakers and not Top Glove alone.
An enhanced MCO was implemented in the Klang Valley on July 3 following the high number of Covid-19 cases there.
Earlier today, Malaysiakini quoted an International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) source saying that a letter for Top Glove to operate in an enhanced MCO area has been revoked.
The source said it was revoked because they are not on the list of essential services in the NSC's SOP.
"During a system configuration, some companies were able to download the (approval) letter but they still can't use the letter because the SOP supersedes everything," the source added.
Malaysiakini had earlier sighted Miti's Covid-19 Intelligent Management System (Cims) letter for Top Glove to operate its factory in Klang.
Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said only factories producing essential goods such as rice, bread, sugar, cooking oil, wheat, fresh milk, baby formula, medicine, and face masks would be allowed to operate throughout the enhanced MCO period.
The Miti source stressed that Cims letters for non-essential companies to operate in these areas are not valid.
This included two factories and one office in Klang and Teluk Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat which also had Cims letters that Malaysiakini reported on.
The enhanced MCO for most of Selangor is in force until July 16.
