Pakatan Harapan has called on the Higher Education Ministry to lower university tuition fees during the pandemic.
In a statement today, the coalition's education committee said for public universities, this can be done by directly lowering tuition fees, in line with demands from students.
Meanwhile, for private universities, they said the government can subsidise tuition fees for students from B40 and M40 families (bottom 40 percent and middle 40 percent of income earners), which may allow varsities to lower fees.
To help with university upkeep, Harapan suggested that the government can give special grants to public universities to cover administration costs.
They also said private universities can be granted tax exemptions based on the number of scholarships they award, and how much they lower tuition fees.
The Harapan committee said the government must take unconventional measures to ensure that the people's access to quality higher education is not disrupted by the ongoing health crisis.
The statement was jointly signed by Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Tampin MP Hasan Bahrom, Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, Sekijang MP Natrah Ismail, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong, and Tangga Batu MP Rusnah Aluai.
Maszlee, who is an independent lawmaker, chairs the committee. He was the education minister during Harapan's time in the federal government.
