The Human Resources Ministry has ordered an immediate investigation into yesterday’s fatal incident at an LRT3 construction site in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang, that killed one and injured four others.
It said a team of investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Department will conduct the comprehensive probe.
“It will also involve the department headquarters' forensic engineering section and construction site safety section to identify the cause of the incident and determine if there was a breach of legal requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994,” the ministry said in a statement today.
Reminding employers of their obligation under the Act to ensure the safety, health and welfare of their employees during work, the ministry added that even the safety of the public at worksites under the employers’ control needs to be protected as well.
“The ministry would like to stress that it takes all accidents and occupational disease stemming from occupational activities seriously, including accident cases involving the construction sector,” it said.
Besides the ministry's probe, LRT project owner Prasarana Malaysia Berhad also instructed its contractor MRCB George Kent to carry out an investigation.
Prasarana said that the company has asked MRCB George Kent to provide a detailed report and mitigation measures to prevent future incidents.
“We firmly believe that safety is paramount and it requires attention and total commitment from all parties involved to ensure overall worksite safety is maintained and that we comply with safety regulations at all times.
“Prasarana will take appropriate action, including to immediately launch our own probe into the matter as well as extending our full cooperation to the authorities to ensure a thorough and independent investigation is carried out,” the company said in a statement last night.
Prasarana sent its condolences to the victims and their families as well as thanked the Fire and Rescue Department and the police who helped retrieve all the victims from the incident site.
“The cause of the incident has yet to be ascertained,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong also expressed his condolences last night to the family of the deceased worker and prayed that the other four injured workers will recover soon.
“I take this incident seriously and urge a thorough investigation to be carried out immediately,” Wee said on Facebook.
Yesterday, a Bangladeshi construction worker died after the scaffolding at the LRT3 construction site around Jalan Langat in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang, collapsed shortly before 3pm.
