Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has expressed his dismay over the power struggle in Putrajaya amidst the rakyat’s suffering.
“I am disappointed at leaders disturbing the government and jostling for power at a time when the rakyat are depressed and facing numerous difficulties brought on by the ever-menacing Covid-19 pandemic.
“Now is the time for you to jostle to help the rakyat, not the time to be jostling for power and influence,” he said in a statement on Facebook today.
As it is Maal Hijrah today, the sultan called upon all Muslim leaders, especially the country’s Malay leaders, to reflect upon the lessons taught in Islam, where the power to rule is the will of Allah.
“Allah gives power to those deserving and Allah will take power from those undeserving.
“Therefore, all leaders must be honourable and trustworthy in discharging their duties, by prioritising the rakyat and the unity of the ummah, not your own selfish interests to the detriment of the nation’s harmony and political balance,” he said.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently launched an offensive against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, with at least 13 Umno MPs having officially withdrawn support for the premier.
Two Umno ministers also recently resigned from the cabinet, saying they were following their party’s decision.
Muhyiddin is now estimated to have the support of around 100 MPs out of the current 220 – 11 shy of a simple majority.
However, Muhyiddin dismissed suggestions that he should step down and promised to test his majority when Parliament reconvenes in September.
