Four military police personnel were killed this morning during what is believed to be an amok incident at the Kota Samarahan Air Force Base in Kuching, Sarawak.

According to Sarawak police commissioner Aidi Ismail, the initial report stated that the incident happened at about 7.50am at the camp’s guard post when the suspect started shooting his colleagues there.

“The incident involved four Royal Malaysia Air Force personnel who were on duty at the guard post.

“It happened when one of the personnel took an M4 assault rifle and started shooting, killing two of his colleagues at the scene, and seriously injuring another.

“The injured personnel was treated at the Kota Samarahan Heart Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted this morning.

It is learned that the suspect had also shot himself and died at the scene.

Aidi said that police are still investigating the motive of the incident.

Later, Bernama quoted Sarawak deputy police commissioner Mancha Ata as saying that the suspect had seized the weapon from a camp guard station store at the base.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the Air Force said they are leaving the case to the police to investigate, and would also form an inquiry board to identify what had caused the incident.

“We also would like to urge all quarters not to spread any speculation that may jeopardise the police investigation,” the statement read.
