Kedah MB's critic wants apology, RM100k from cop who arrested him

In a turn of events, a man who was previously detained for criticising Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is now taking legal action against the police.
He is demanding RM100,000 and a public apology from Kuala Muda district police chief Adzli Abu Shah for alleged defamation.
At about 3am on Aug 9, Roslei Kamisan was arrested at his home in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan after Sanusi’s aide lodged a report against him. He was later brought across state lines to Kuala Muda, Kedah for questioning.
The 61-year-old had earlier uploaded a video criticising the menteri besar over the latter’s “joke” calling for sign-ups for container morgues.
In a subsequent press statement about the arrest, Adzli did not name Roslei but said he had a “past criminal record” that was still being probed under Section 506 of the Penal Code (Criminal Intimidation).
Through his lawyer Asheeq Ali Sethi Alvi today, Roslei took issue with Adzli's alleged false claim about his criminal record.
“That statement (by Adzli) was false and defamatory towards our client.
“Our client does not have any court charges or any ongoing investigations against him under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
“This defamatory statement has tarnished the good name of our client as a retired member of the armed forces, a Muslim, and an individual respected and liked by many,” read Asheeq’s statement.
Roslei had sent Adzli a letter of demand yesterday (Aug 13) with a two-week deadline.
His three demands were for the police chief to:
- Retract his alleged defamatory statement unconditionally.
- Publish a written apology both in mass media outlets where the offending statement was first published as well as in mainstream and online media of Roslei’s choice. The contents of the apology must obtain Roslei’s prior approval before publication.
- Pay Roslei RM100,000 in compensation.
“Should Adzli fail to fulfil these demands within 14 days from when he received this letter, we (the lawyers) have been instructed to file legal proceedings against Adzli in court,” Asheeq said.
The lawyer added that his client will issue letters of demand next week to media outlets that published Adzli’s alleged defamatory statements.
Roslei’s letter of demand to Adzli was issued through Messrs Karpal Singh & Company.
