Ex-Road Transport personnel gets 20 years jail for bribery

A former Road Transport Department (RTD) enforcement personnel was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and fined RM80,000 by the Sessions Court in Butterworth, Penang today on eight counts of corruption.
Judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid handed down the sentence on Hanisham Din, 50, after finding him guilty of the offence.
In the judgment, he said the defence failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case at the end of the defence case.
On all counts, Hanisham, who was then Grade KP26 enforcement personnel at the Penang RTD, was charged with accepting bribes from Kedah Coastal Transport & Trading Sdn Bhd.
The bribes were an inducement to not take action against lorries belonging to the company that may breach provisions under Road Transport Act 1987 in 2016.
He was charged with eight counts under Section 16(a)(B)of the MACC Act 2009 and eight alternative charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code.
Hanisham, who was brought to the court to face the charges on Aug 21, 2019, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor from MACC Azlan Basri, while the accused was represented by lawyer CP Ang.
