Minister: Preventive law for drug traffickers sees 25 teenagers held since 2020

PARLIAMENT | Some 25 teenagers have been arrested under the country's preventive law that deals with drug traffickers between 2020 and June this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin revealed this information in his written reply to a question posed by Alor Setar MP Chan Ming Kai.
"Between 2020 and June 2021, a total of 1,814 individuals have been arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Act (Special Preventive Measures) 1985.
"From this number, 1.38 percent of them are teenagers," he said.
The preventive act provides for the "preventive detention of persons associated with any activity relating to or involving the trafficking in dangerous drugs".
Hamzah said between January 2020 and last month, the authorities have arrested 369 individuals under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, while 2,832 others were held under the Prevention of Crime Act.
No teenagers were among those arrested.
He added that there was also no individual has been arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act during the said period.
