Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he was satisfied with the travel arrangements for Langkawi - his Parliamentary constituency - but there is room for improvement.
Speaking to reporters in Langkawi today, Mahathir proposed that the frequency of flights and ferries be increased to reduce the number of passengers on each trip.
Mahathir, a former medical practitioner, said he was concerned with passengers having to sit close to each other in a full ferry or aeroplane.
“It should be below capacity. Ferries, for example, should have more trips and fewer passengers,” he said.
Langkawi has been receiving visitors for the first time in months on September 16.
The authorities have enforced mandatory Covid-19 screening at entry points to the island and the positivity rate has been very low.
Mahathir hoped that foreign flights will be allowed to land in Langkawi as well to boost the economy.
However, he said strict rules will still need to be enforced, adding that many of the visitors are not practising physical distancing.
