Former National Sports Council director-general Zolkples Embong has died at his home this morning, aged 62.
According to Bernama, Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the body of Zolkples was found on the floor inside the house at 10 am.
“His nephew and former personal assistant had called police for assistance to open the door to the house after several calls went unanswered,” he said when contacted.
It is learnt that the body was found in the kitchen.
Several NSC officers were also said to have tried calling Zolkples since last Friday after he did not turn up for Friday prayers at the NSC Vista in Bukit Jalil.
The late Zolkples served as NSC director-general for seven years from 2007 to 2014 and was later appointed CEO of the Malaysian Sea Games Organising Committee (MASOC) in 2017.
Khairy Jamaluddin, who was youth and sports minister, from 2013 to 2018 expressed his condolences and said the late Zolkeples Embong was a dedicated servant to national sports.
“He gave a lot of service to sporting development, both domestically and regionally.
“I had the opportunity to gain knowledge and work with him, particularly when he served as the CEO of the 2017 SEA Games which also saw Malaysia emerge as the champion of the games,” said Khairy on Facebook.
Former Olympic Council of Malaysia secretary-general Sieh Kok Chi told Malaysiakini that Malaysian sports had lost a good friend.
"He was prepared to contribute to the development of Malaysian sports after a few months rest. The late Zolkples had at least 40 years experience in Malaysian sport that should not have been wasted.
"I feel rather sad," he said.
