The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has condemned racist remarks made against national women’s singles player S Kisona on social media.
A user on Facebook had earlier referred to Kisona (above) using a racially derogatory term starting with “k” in a posting, which had gone viral.
“The BAM is utterly appalled by the racist remarks made towards our national women’s singles player Kisona.
“As the governing body of the sport in this country, BAM has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination thus we absolutely condemn the remarks and we will always stand up for our players,” BAM said in a statement today.
Describing it as a “dreadful remark” that was uncalled for, BAM urged all Malaysians to condemn this “senseless” act.
The association said they will continue to fight for the eradication of racism in sports, especially within badminton.
“We continue to uphold all initiatives that support progressive and inclusive nation-building,” BAM said.
The Facebook post by user “Borhan Che Rahim” questioned why Kisona was chosen as Malaysia’s main player using the derogatory term. It has since been taken down.
Racist comments unacceptable
Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu has also condemned the racist comments against Kisona, calling it unacceptable.
“Keluarga Malaysia (the Malaysian Family) is like a bunch of bananas, some are good, some are bad and some do not know how to use good language in talking about something.
“We are made up of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans and so on. Do not despise others because of race, skin colour or religion, more so those who are fighting to make Malaysia’s name famous,” Faizal said, as reported by Bernama today.
Kisona had represented Malaysia in the Sudirman Cup 2021 tournament in Vantaa, Finland and made it to the semi-finals where she was defeated by Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.
