Deputy minister: Over 76k divorce petitions during Covid-19 pandemic

Of this total, petitions made to the Syariah Court numbered 66,440 cases or 87 percent.
Divorce petitions filed in civil court numbered 10,346 cases or 13 percent.
De facto deputy law minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (above) provided a breakdown in response to a question from Noor Amin Ahmad (Pakatan Harapan-Kangar) today.
In both courts, she said well-populated Selangor recorded the highest number of divorce petitions - 12,479 in the Syariah Court and 3,160 in the civil court.
Interestingly, missing was the number of civil court divorce petitions filed in Penang, Sabah and Sarawak.
Mas did not disclose why this data was not included.
The deputy minister noted that not all divorce petitions made in the Syariah Court were approved or resulted in a divorce.
On average, she said 121 divorce petitions were filed per day at the Syariah Court during the Covid-19 pandemic, while 18 divorce petitions were filed daily at the civil court during the same time period.
Asked by Amin how the government was helping families in need, Mas said she will provide details of initiatives in a written reply.
