'Muafakat was best alliance' - Nik Abduh talks up PAS-Umno ties

In the aftermath of the Malacca state election, where the Umno-led BN coalition won 21 seats while PAS and its ally Bersatu trailed home with just two seats, Nik Abduh is calling for yet another realignment.
"The best political agreement that has been signed over the decades is in the Himpunan Perpaduan Ummah (HPU), which forms the Muafakat Nasional (MN) between Ummo and PAS.
"It’s a covenant blessed by God and unites two large groups of Muslims who have been at loggerheads for decades.
"He broke down all the rages of anger and revenge and built on it mercy and love for fellow ummah," Nik Abduh said in a posting on Facebook.
He pointed out that PAS was able to survive seven years with DAP in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition from 2008 to 2015.
"We did it to jointly oppose the injustice of the BN government at that time, and we should not allow the spread of flames to cause the collapse of MN in a short period of time" he added.
'Do we want to turn tears of love and joy into hatred?'
Nik Abduh was sentimental about the brief period of direct cooperation between Umno and PAS, asking if his party really wanted to turn the tears of love and joy into hatred, resentment and degrading thoughts among the people.
In the aftermath of Pakatan Harapan's 2018 general election victory, long time foes Umno and PAS formed the MN pact and did well in a number of by-elections.
However, the defection of Bersatu and the formation of a new government under Muhyiddin Yassin changed the dynamic and resulted in PAS focusing more on the Perikatan Nasional coalition with Bersatu.
While Nik Abduh is pushing on cooperation, PAS Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari and Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki have been engaged in a war of words ever since the latter came out with a statement saying PAS stood a chance to win three seats if it had accepted Umno's invitation for cooperation - but it ended up empty-handed instead.
