S'wak PKR: Separate manifestos due to demographics, not split in Harapan

Sarawak PKR has denied that its move to announce its own manifesto instead of a joint one with the state Pakatan Harapan was due to infighting.

PKR vice-president Michael Teo (above) explained that it is instead due to demographic and geographic differences of the seats PKR is contesting compared to DAP.

Teo said PKR is contesting mostly in rural and suburban seats, whereas DAP is mostly in the urban areas, hence they agreed to launch manifestos separately.

"We want to emphasise land issues and DAP wants to emphasise on others issues.

"So we said it's okay since we are (contesting) under different flags, so it doesn't matter," the Miri MP told Malaysiakini.

 Loggerheads over seat allocations

The Sarawak PKR manifesto among others promises to improve quality of life, generate job opportunities, reform basic infrastructure and facilities in rural areas.

It also promises to improve the government's mobile services in rural areas.

The move to launch their own manifesto is in contrast to the recently concluded Malacca polls where Harapan component parties released a joint manifesto as a coalition.

Asked whether there were separate manifestos due to differing opinions, Teo emphatically denied it.

"No, no, no. We don't mind combining (manifestos), we also don't mind having separate ones," he said.

Sarawak DAP and PKR are currently at loggerheads over seat allocations.

PKR is demanding to contest in more seats, while DAP insists that they stick to an agreement on seat allocation reached between Sarawak Harapan parties in January.
