The Malacca government has banned the sale of liquor in the Ayer Keroh Country Club.
The Ayer Keroh Country Club issued a notice to its members informing them of the decision yesterday.
"The state government of Malacca has instructed Ayer Keroh Country Club Berhad to stop the sale of alcoholic beverages within the premises of Ayer Keroh Country Club Berhad with immediate effect," it said in a statement.
The country club is linked to the state government.
The board of directors of the Ayer Keroh Country Club is nominated by the Malacca government.
According to its website, its current chairperson is Muhammad Jailani Khamis.
Jailani defected from PKR to Umno in 2020. He contested his Rembia seat under the Umno ticket in the 2021 state election and won.
He was subsequently reappointed as an exco member. Jailani is in charge of the tourism, heritage and culture portfolio.
Meanwhile, Kota Laksamana assemblyperson Low Chee Leong criticised the ban.
He claimed the state BN government was becoming emboldened following its landslide victory in last month's Malacca polls.
The DAP lawmaker said the BN government was failing to walk the talk with its Keluarga Malaysia slogan and expressed concern that the liquor ban will be further expanded.
"The state government's prohibition ignores the country's diversity," he said in a statement.
