Johor Harapan rejects state assembly election for now

Johor Pakatan Harapan is of the view that any move to implement a state assembly election at this time is insensitive to the reality that the people are going through.
In a joint statement today, the top leadership of Johor Harapan said the health crisis due to Covid-19 and the impact of the economic slowdown are still unresolved. Furthermore, the emergence of the Omicron variant has added to the people's concerns.
"Many ordinary people have been affected. From the domestic economic point of view, many have lost their jobs and Covid-19 changed many lives.
"The country is also struggling with floods that have claimed dozens of lives and destroyed property worth millions of ringgit. This is a black period in history. Even more unfortunate, when the people are facing all these disasters, some leaders are on holiday," they said.
The statement was issued by state Harapan component leaders including Amanah's Aminolhuda Hassan, PKR's Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and DAP's Liew Chin Tong.
They were responding to a statement by Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad who said the state government would look into and monitor the situation, including examining the possibility of holding an election due to the existing Johor administration having the advantage of only one seat in the state assembly.
According to Hasni, a meeting with the prime minister will be held to inform him about the position of the state government which has a very slim majority.
Help people instead
Harapan believes that the statement issued by the menteri besar on the possible implementation of a state election is not empathetic with the people's plight.
"Johor Harapan is of the view that all efforts, energy, commitment and funds should be channelled to help the people who are in trouble at this time, even though the Johor assembly position is at 28-27 after the demise of Kempas assemblyperson Osman Sapian.
"Johor Harapan has unanimously stated its full commitment to focus on defending the fate of the people as opposed to political operatives who are focused on power struggles alone.
"Do not make the people even sicker of politicians when the people are struggling for their lives and trying to find food for their survival," the leaders added.
