Electoral watchdog Bersih has criticised Putrajaya for appointing Alor Gajah MP Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof as the chairperson of Boustead Holdings Bhd.
In a statement, Bersih said the appointment was unethical because it would be seen as an attempt to solicit support.
"It presents the possibility of systemic abuse, and this will only come at the expense of the country’s development and the economic performance of such agencies.
"More concerning is the possibility of large-scale financial abuse, as happened in 1MDB. Boustead itself has been suffering losses since 2018," said Bersih.
Redzuan (above) was a former corporate figure before being elected on a Pakatan Harapan ticket during the 2018 elections.
During the Harapan administration, he served as Dr Mahathir Mohamad's minister of entrepreneur development. During the Muhyiddin Yassin administration, he served as a special functions minister.
By the time Ismail Sabri Yaakob became prime minister, Redzuan was not given a cabinet position.
Boustead is a statutory body under the Defence Ministry. It is involved in plantations, real estate, pharmaceuticals, heavy industries and finance.
Bersih said there should be laws and procedures to prevent MPs from holding GLC positions because the role of MPs includes scrutinising GLCS.
GLCs, said Bersih, ought to be led by professionals because mixing business and politics will encourage cronyism, corruption, patronage and abuse of power.
"Some GLCs already have stipulations such as Socso which prohibits the appointment of an elected representative as chairperson based on its incorporating statute.
"Laws should also provide legally-binding appointment criteria and stipulate recruitment and reporting mechanisms for greater transparency," said Bersih.
