Education Minister Radzi Jidin has ordered a probe into claims that a student was only given rice and gravy in the free Supplementary Food Programme (RMT).
This comes after a viral social media post concerning the RMT was brought to Radzi's attention.
“Yesterday night, I was informed of a viral Facebook post on a photo of white rice and gravy that was alleged to be food given to a student under the free Supplementary Food Programme.
“I take this allegation seriously and have ordered for an investigation to be carried out - which will identify the school involved.
“The Education Ministry will not compromise in matters that involve the welfare of students,” said Radzi in a Facebook post earlier today.
The free Supplementary Food Programme aims to provide free supplementary food to all government and government-assisted primary school students coming from low-income households to positively impact their physical health and healthy eating habits.
On Jan 6, former education minister Maszlee Malik urged the government to review the allocations given for the RMT as canteen operators have said the RM2.50 allocation per student is no longer relevant due to rising food prices.
The programme received RM400 million allocation for the RMT in Budget 2022 - an increase from its 2021 allocation of RM298.9 million.
