Covid-19 deaths (Feb 16): 31 reported fatalities, total at 32,180
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 31 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Feb 15), bringing the cumulative death toll to 32,180.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 32.3 percent or 10 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 974 deaths per 1 million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.
Sabah recorded the highest number of new deaths at 8, making up 25.8 percent of the newly reported fatalities.
Other states with a significant number of newly reported deaths include Selangor (7).
The remaining deaths were in Johor (6), Penang (5), Kedah (2), Negeri Sembilan (1), Perak (1) and Terengganu (1).
No new deaths were reported in Kelantan, Malacca, Pahang, Perlis, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
A total of 30 out of the 31 reported deaths or 96.8 percent occurred in the last seven days.
The remaining one death occurred more than a week ago but was only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.
An average of 13 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 18, indicating an uptrend.
To date, 577 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.
A total of 780 Covid-19 deaths were reported in January 2022, 1,174 in December 2021, 1,612 in November 2021 and 2,704 in October 2021.
As of yesterday, there were 182,965 active Covid-19 cases. This is an increase of 120.3 percent from the 83,071 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has increased by 344.1 percent from 41,199.
From the 22,133 new cases yesterday, a total of 448 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 372 (83 percent) were from education institutions while 57 (12.7 percent) were from workplaces.
The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to high-risk groups such as old folks homes (16 - 3.6 percent) and detention centres (3 - 0.7 percent).
