Covid-19 (April 8): 14,944 new cases, 31 fatalities

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 14,944 new Covid-19 infections yesterday, bringing the cumulative cases to 4,307,529.

It also reported 31 new fatalities, which put the death toll at 35,259.

Active cases stood at 158,440, down 34.6 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Of the 31 new deaths, six were categorised as "brought in dead".

The new fatalities were from Putrajaya (6), Johor (4), Kedah (4), Sarawak (4), Pahang (3), Perak (3), Malacca (2), Selangor (2), Penang (1), Terengganu (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).

There have been 276 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 2,235 deaths last month and 770 deaths in February.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,061 deaths per 1 million population, and the fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

There are 3,012 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised of which 206 are in intensive care.

As of April 7, the national infectivity rate is at 0.83, indicating that the spread is slowing.

The value must be kept under 1.0 to prevent exponential growth in cases.

Over the past week, an average of 35.1 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 58.8, also indicating a downtrend.
