Police have reportedly arrested a 25-year-old suspect for allegedly throwing himself into oncoming traffic in Klang after a video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms.
North Klang OCPD S Vijaya Rao said the man was arrested on Jalan Shahpadu Rantau Panjang, Klang, this morning and has been remanded to facilitate investigations.
“The case is classified under Section 336 of the Penal Code, which is for actions that endanger lives and the safety of others,” he said in a statement.
Upon conviction, the offence is punishable by up to three months imprisonment, or a fine of up to RM500, or both.
Vijaya also confirmed receiving a police report on April 7 where the complainant claimed a man suddenly rushed his car while he was driving, and leapt onto his car’s windshield. The incident reportedly took place at Jalan Goh Hock Huat in Klang.
A 45-second dashcam footage of the incident was widely circulated on social media, alongside messages warning readers to be wary of people willfully running into traffic.
Many social media posts also claimed the incident was a foiled “crash for cash” scheme – a type of fraud where a traffic accident is staged to demand compensation from unsuspecting drivers or their insurance company.
Earlier, before the arrest, The Star had quoted Vijaya saying that a search of nearby hospitals and clinics came up empty as the pedestrian did not seek medical treatment.
“The pedestrian, who suffered minor injuries, left the location when told that the victim’s car was equipped with a dashcam,” he was quoted as saying.
