Covid-19 (April 23): 5,624 new cases, 9 deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 5,624 new Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative infections to 4,427,067.

Active cases stood at 80,978, down 44.4 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Selangor (3,583)
Kuala Lumpur (565)
Perak (312)
Negeri Sembilan (265)
Penang (169)
Sarawak (134)
Johor (129)
Malacca (95)
Kedah (94)
Putrajaya (82)
Pahang (75)
Sabah (65)
Kelantan (23)
Terengganu (21)
Labuan (9)
Perlis (3)

Another nine deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which two were declared as 'brought in dead'.

Over the past week, an average of 11.7 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 27.6, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 35,491 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus.

There have been 508 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 2,235 deaths last month and 770 in February.

The state with the highest deaths was Kedah (6) followed by Johor (1), Sabah (1) and Sarawak (1).

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,071 deaths per 1 million population, and the fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

There are 1,605 Covid-19 patients hospitalised of which 89 are in intensive care.

The highest number of admissions yesterday was recorded in Selangor (199) followed by Johor (80) and Sabah (70).
