A doctor will be among one of two challengers going up against Hulu Selangor MP June Leow Hsiad Hui for the Hulu Selangor PKR division chief's post.

SP Care founder Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajah (above) said betrayals by MPs, including those from PKR during the Sheraton Move in 2020, have motivated him to play a more active role after being a party member since 2008.

"The Sheraton Move not only brought down the Pakatan Harapan government but had a deep impact on voters including myself to not easily trust a segment of elected representatives who were given a mandate.

"This motivated me to come forward and continue fighting for rights of the people who were increasingly sick of games played by certain MPs they trusted in the past," Sathia said during a press conference in Gapimas, Hulu Selangor, yesterday.

Also present was Sathia's running mate for the division deputy chief's post, Saifuddin Shafi, who is also a special officer to Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

Aside from Leow and Sathia, businessperson Azizan Zakaria is the third contender for the Hulu Selangor PKR division chief's position.

In Bangi, former political secretary to Pandan MP Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Romli Ishak, is in a five-cornered contest for the division chief's post against contenders Yap Wee Leong, Saiful Azlan Zainal, G Balamurali and J Jayakanthan.

"Previously, I contested as the PKR Youth permanent chairperson in 2001. I won and held the position until 2007.

"Aside from that, I did not contest for other positions. This time I'm running because I see negative elements that started to infiltrate the party.

"I feel the need to bring a political culture that we want in the party, based on the Permatang Pauh Declaration that we want to ensure honesty and sincerity in the party," Romli told Malaysiakini.

The Bangi PKR division chief's position has remained vacant following the sacking of its incumbent in 2020 as part of an internal purge following the Sheraton Move.

Xavier's daughter to stand in Kota Raja

Meanwhile, the Kota Raja PKR division will see Sangetha Jayakumar, daughter of former PKR Kuala Langat MP Dr Xavier Jayakumar, going up against incumbent division chief Gunarajah George.

"My stand is clear, that we need to be the change we want to see. Therefore, I offer myself to contest the Kota Raja division chief's post.

"This is not an easy decision to make as we know the Kota Raja division is the largest division in terms of membership numbers.

"However, I stand by my decision that change requires courage. As such, I came forward to pave the way for other women after me," said Sangetha, who is also an incumbent national PKR Women vice-chief.

Xavier was the Kota Raja PKR chief until 2018.

Sangetha has remained with PKR even after her father announced his departure to be an independent MP last year.
