Kuala Selangor police have denied assaulting teenager M Vijaya Varman last week in the course of questioning him in relation to alleged theft of electrical cables.

OCPD Ibrahim Chin, contacted today, claimed that the investigation was conducted according to the law and that "there was no brutality involved".

Vijaya Varman, 19, lodged a report at the Brickfields district police headquarters yesterday, alleging that he was a victim of a four-hour terror ride around Pasir Penampang in a van, during which he was repeatedly assaulted by three police officers.

He said he was arrested at his house at 2am by seven police officers, who did not state the reason or produce a warrant.

Confirming the arrest, Ibrahim said: "There was no force involved. After the investigations, we released him. We used our discretion and we were reasonable."

He also said the complaint had been investigated by calling in the officers involved in the arrest.

"This is the first time that such a complaint has been lodged against them. I feel that it was not right to lodge such a report. The complainant should have come to (Kuala Selangor) where we could confirmed his injuries through a medical check up."

Asked to respond to fears of possible repercussions for accusing the police of brutality, he said there is no reason why the complainant should be afraid as "we don't do this".

The Police Watch and Human Rights Committee, which has taken up the case, has urged federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman to investigate the Kuala Selangor police for alleged abuse of power.
