The water disruption that affected 472 areas in Selangor since this evening will be fully resolved by 9am tomorrow, according to Air Selangor.
It said the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant resumed operations at 3.30pm today and began distributing water to affected customers since 9pm tonight.
“As of 10.30pm, water supply recovery at the affected areas has reached 49 percent.
“The water supply recovery period differs from one area to another according to the location of consumers’ premises as well as the water pressure of the distribution system.
“Alternative assistance through water tankers will be mobilised to consumers, with priority given to critical premises,” it said.
Earlier, these areas were experiencing a water supply disruption on the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri after “diesel-like” odour pollution was detected at the Jenderam Hilir Raw Water Pump Station intake.
“This incident is due to the high water level and swift currents caused by heavy rain, which caused previous pollution containment efforts (at Sungai Kabul) to enter the river,” said Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) in a statement.
The incident caused a temporary shutdown of the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant at 6.15am and Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plant at 11.30am today.
The areas affected by the disruption are within five Air Selangor regions comprising Sepang (196 areas), Petaling (172), Hulu Langat (54), Putrajaya (23), and Kuala Langat (27).
These areas began experiencing unscheduled water supply disruption at 3pm today.
According to the Selangor state executive councillor for Tourism, Environment, Green Technology, and Orang Asli Hee Loy Sian, Luas responded to the odour pollution by deploying more oil booms, oil pads, and activated charcoal to Sungai Kabul.
The pollution was then no longer detectable at the water treatment plants from 2.30pm.
Air Selangor said the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant resumed operations at 3:30pm and will be channelling water to those affected by the shutdown of the Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plant as well.
This is the second incident that happened within four days at the Jenderam Hilir Raw Water Pump Station.
The previous incident was on April 30, when water cuts affected 463 areas due to odour pollution.
Hee said the state government will not compromise with the culprits behind the pollution.
“The Selangor state government and Luas urge everyone to be on alert for activities that could contribute to pollution of water sources, and report any suspicious activity to Luas for immediate action,” he said.
