Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been flayed by DAP for “adopting” the Kuala Selangor district.
In a statement today, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke (above, left) said the “adoption” was an abuse of authority.
“Zafrul should not use his position as the finance minister to give himself an electoral advantage.
“I’ve been an MP since 2008. I’ve never heard of any federal ministries ‘adopting’ a district.
“A ministry should be making policies and delivering services to the entire country, not just a given locality,” said Loke.
Zafrul hosted an event called Majlis Kenduri Rakyat Kuala Selangor yesterday in Puncak Alam, Selangor.
During the event, he announced that his ministry was “adopting” the Kuala Selangor district which will help spur development.
“Personally, I am a little sentimental with the Kuala Selangor district. There are many local potentials that can be developed and highlighted,” Zafrul told his audience, reported Bernama.
However, Zafrul claims his ministry treats all districts equally and was coy about his rumoured intent on running for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat.
Zafrul also announced that a station for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will be set up in Puncak Alam.
Commenting on this, Loke, a former transport minister, said it was wrong for Zafrul to make such an announcement.
Loke said all railway-related matters should be announced by Land Public Transport Agency which is overseen by the Transport Ministry.
According to the Environmental Impact Assessment report for the ECRL project, the Puncak Alam station was listed as “provisional”, along with the Kapar station.
The ECRL project is Malaysia’s biggest infrastructure project which is projected to cost RM50 billion and will link the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia with Port Klang.
The Klang Valley segment of the ECRL will follow a northern alignment, avoiding most major populated areas.
