PAS will not seek early polls in Kedah, T'ganu and K'tan

PAS' leadership will uphold its previous decision not to dissolve the state legislative assemblies of Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan until the end of their respective terms.

Speaking to reporters in Sungai Panjang, Selangor yesterday, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad said this decision was made "long ago" and still stands today.

"Our decision is that states led by a PAS menteri besar will not (have their legislative assemblies) dissolved until the end of the term.

"That decision is in place today. What the future holds, we don't know. The authority (to advise the ruler) to dissolve the state assembly lies with the menteri besar. At the national level, it lies with the prime minister," Idris was quoted as saying by Malaysia Gazette.

Idris (above) said this when asked to comment on PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's statement that PAS prefers if Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob serves out his term.

The expiry dates of the Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan assemblies are July 4, 2023, July 1, 2023, and June 28, 2023, respectively. As for Parliament, its expiry is July 15, 2023.

Idris said the incumbent governments should be given more time to serve out their terms to work on more pressing matters.

"PAS is focusing on completing our terms and socio-economic issues faced by the rakyat now that (Malaysia) is politically stable and the economy is improving," the minister in the prime minister's department in charge of religious affairs added.

Ismail Sabri has come under pressure from Umno top leaders to dissolve Parliament for a fresh election.

Umno's top leadership believes it should ride on the momentum of the Malacca and Terengganu state elections - both won handsomely by BN - by forcing snap polls.
