Naza group chair's ex-wife starts serving seven days' jail sentence
Emilia Hanafi, the former wife of Naza group chairperson SM Faisal SM Nasimuddin, is now serving her seven-day prison sentence for her failure to comply with Syariah High Court’s orders on visitation dates for her children to be with their father.

Emilia Hanafi, the former wife of Naza group chairperson SM Faisal SM Nasimuddin, is now serving her seven-day prison sentence for her failure to comply with Syariah High Court’s orders on visitation dates for her children to be with their father.
The sentence took effect today after Emilia surrendered herself to the Syariah High Court.
According to lawyer Nazri Yahya, who represented Emilia, his client is serving her sentence at the Kajang Women's Prison.
The 43-year-old was sentenced to seven days in jail for unilaterally rescheduling the visitation dates for her children to be with their father.
"After completing her prison sentence, my client will appear for the proceedings at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court set for July 6," Nazri was quoted as saying in an Astro Awani report.
On Sept 4, 2019, the Syariah High Court sentenced Emilia to seven days in jail.
She was later released on RM5,000 bail pending her appeal.
On June 8, Emilia filed a judicial review challenging the Kuala Lumpur Syariah High Court’s jurisdiction to sentence her to seven days in jail for going against the court orders.
In the application, Emilia stated that the Kuala Lumpur Syariah High Court only has limited local court jurisdiction based on the Federal Constitution and Section 4 of the Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984.
Emilia had sought a declaration that the Syariah High Court and the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court of Appeal have no jurisdiction to hear committal proceedings and punish individuals who are not residents of the Federal Territory for contempt of court offences.
The mother had also applied for a restraining order to detain syariah committal proceedings, namely an application for permission to issue a Notice of Show Cause (NTS) in the Syariah High Court filed by SM Faisal.
Emilia had previously expressed her hope that her case would be an example of receiving proper justice.
Prior to this, lawyer Siti Kassim had said Emilia was forced to surrender herself to the Syariah High Court and serve her sentence due to the constant emotional stress and trauma she faced.
Emilia and SM Faisal, who have three children together, divorced in 2016 - with Emilia maintaining full custody of their three children and Faisal given visitation rights.
