The government will not recommend an economic shutdown although Covid-19 cases are on the rise.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob urged the public to instead maintain good practices to avoid the spread of Covid-19, including receiving vaccine booster shots.
“Life goes on as normal... But we need to take measures to protect ourselves,” he told reporters in Bera, Pahang today.
The number of active Covid-19 cases as of today was 35,882, up 27.8 percent compared to 14 days ago. There has also been a slight increase in average daily Covid-19 deaths being reported.
However, the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals or under intensive care remains largely stable.
Currently, the Health Ministry is mulling a return to enforcing indoor mask-wearing should the spread of Covid-19 continue to trend upwards.
Ismail Sabri said the spread of Covid-19 was now caused by new sub-variants of the virus.
“That is why I advise people, even at open-air events such as this, people can choose to wear masks.
“If there are too many people, spread out,” he said.
He said there are about 7 million people who have yet to receive their booster shots and advised them to do so.
“Although there is no compulsion, people should proactively protect themselves and their families,” he said.
